Support the International Violence Against Women Act, Join Us in the Fight to End Violence Against Women and Girls 25.11.2010
The campaign, which celebrates its 20th anniversary this year, runs under the theme Structures of Violence: Defining the Intersections of Militarism and Violence Against Women.
Some of the recent conflicts in the world have created new forms of gender-based violence, with militarism often fuelling violence and cultivating a culture of fear and division. This violence, aggression or military intervention can have a disproportionate impact on women, who become victims of rape as a weapon of war, as well as other forms of sexual and gender-based violence.
Unfortunately violence against women and girls persist in every society in one form or the other. The denial of the right to education and choices, forced and early marriages, physical and sexual assaults and victimisation are just a few items on a long list
Cavish is all set to play a major role in enhancing support for ending violence against women in Pakistan. With the beginning of 2010, Cavish would be
starting 26 month project in this connection. The project is funded by European Commission under its “European Instrument for Democracy & Human Rights ”. Cavish has partnered with Bedari, a women and children’s rights organization, to implement this project.
The project takes a holistic approach towards addressing the issue of “violence against women” in Pakistan. It aims at achieving its objective through a) policy advocacy, b) capacity building, and c) mass awareness.
Under the policy advocacy, Cavish would be increasing support for approval of the “Domestic Violence Bill (Protection and Prevention)” from both the legislative houses whereas under the capacity building, Cavish would build capacity of police officials and lawyers in understanding women and human’s rights frameworks and instruments such CEDAW and UDHR. In order to create support systems for violence survivors/victims, Cavish would also build capacity of Community based organizations (CBOs) for dealing the VAW cases by providing psychosocial and legal aid. Cavish would carry out radio programs, interactive theaters, seminars and speech competitions to increase awareness about the issues and rights of women.
The project would be implemented in Rawalpindi, Chakwal and Islamabad.
